WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?
I came out “later-ish” at 28, and almost immediately after I started dating everyone around me said, “your experiences are wild.” So I started journaling because they did feel very… interesting to me as well. And—eventually—when I had my heart broken, there was nothing out there in books or movies that made me feel better about my situation. Every book that seemed initially with me in solidarity neatly ended with, “…and THEN I suddenly met the man of my dreams with no warning!” Think: Eat, Pray, Love; The Holiday; Bridget Jones’ Diary. All really fantastic stories, right? But I don’t want to read about someone else’s life magically turning around while I’m still in the trenches of being heartbroken and newly single. So my book is simultaneously about the high highs and low lows of dating, breakups, and finding yourself after coming out a bit later in life without making my readers feel worse.
WHAT THE HELL IS AN OUROBOROS?
“I realized that dating is an ouroboros. An ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a snake eating its own tail, which represented an unending circle of destruction and subsequent renewal. Kinda weird. Nonsensical. Why is that snake eating its own tail? But always oddly hopeful and ready to begin again. My dating life in a nutshell! Finally, that eclectic medieval history elective that I took in college was paying off.”
